Takeaways for Marketing Leaders:
Podcasts
- Buy the talent, not generic inventory. Topics are dominated by names (hosts/guests/case figures), indicating that ROI is tied to talent and episode selection.
- Scale often comes with higher sentiment/brand-safety risk. Several of the biggest engagement months skew negative overall due to the controversial content. More controversy can equal more engagement.
- Attention is concentrated. If an advertiser’s goal is reach and cultural velocity, a small number of shows will do the heavy lifting; the rest function as targeted, incremental extensions.
Live Music Events:
- Music events are now cultural battlegrounds, they're no longer “sponsorship moments.”
- Festivals generated the longest post event amplification. Compared to broadcast focused audio events, Music festivals received the most chatter in the following 2 months, signifying greater long term earned media potential.
- Brand safety is contextual: “Negative” sentiment often reflects fan tribalism, not reputational risk.
Music Genres
- Pop = The Reliable Growth Engine: Pop delivers the cleanest mix of mass engagement + lower negativity, making it the most reliable anchor for brand partnerships
- Rap = The Second Biggest Megaphone (but needs brand safety framework):
Rap drives unmatched cultural gravity and volume, but also the highest polarization/negative adjacency, with many conversations driven by artist feuds. - Maximum Positive Sentiment: Christian and Gospel have dedicated fan bases all year. Religious themed genres have the second biggest audience after pop and rap as well as the highest sentiment.
